Communication is King—or Rather, the King is Communication

We often talk about the culture war—but let’s call it what it is. What we’re really after is “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We’re talking about the coming of the Kingdom of God to earth.

Because THAT is true culture.

The Latin word “cultus” means worship. Culture will only be recaptured when we recapture the object of worship: the Trinity. The Trinity is to be our culture. The Trinity is the goal of the Kingdom—and the pathway to the Kingdom.

We look to the Trinity to see the foundation of all relationships that make up the Kingdom, because the Trinity is the Great Relationship. From all eternity, the Father gives Himself away in love to the Son. In return, the Son, from all eternity, gives Himself away to the Father. And from this perfect union, there procedes from all eternity a Third Person—the love they share is the Holy Spirit.

And then when it comes to culture, we realize how God has made the family to reflect the Trinity after a fashion. A husband gives himself away to his bride, who in turn gives herself away to her husband. The love that exists between them is the children who proceed from them—children who fill the world with beautiful things, who work power in the world, so that ultimately many more come into fellowship with the family.

That is the Kingdom culture that we are after. That is the ideal.

But there are two problems we have in seeing the Trinity as the foundation of all culture.

1.We can’t see the Trinity clearly because of sin. The unbeliever won’t—and in fact can’t—see God at all without the Holy Spirit, though they can still be blessed by Him through common grace. The believer, however, is different. We can see the Trinity. And though our homes may at times be dysfunctional, we differ from the atheist home next door because we have the Holy Spirit living with us. Therefore, we have hope. And Christian parents don’t need to be shocked or dismayed when their child acts like a hypocrite. They expect it, they look for it, and they’re ready with the answer: Jesus. They look to the Trinity for forgiveness and pardon through Jesus.

- Christians admit their sin.

- Christians know what to do about their sin: once we repent and are forgiven, we go straight to the Bible—God’s manual for perfect living.

2. The other problem is this: even if sin weren’t clouding our perceptions of truth in nature and truth in Scripture, just being human makes understanding the Trinity difficult. God is outside the box, and we are inside the box. He is infinite; we are finite. Our language is infinitely different—unless there’s some way for God to bridge the gap and speak in language humans can understand, with meanings humans can grasp. He who is Infinite would have to come to us if we have any hope of understanding him.

God has to become immanent and personal, in other words. He did this by coming into the box in the person of Jesus, who felt everything we feel, lived through our trials and temptations, and was a true man.

So, Jesus can show us how to see the Trinity. And He gives us the Spirit to understand what He is saying and showing.

And so would you cultivate the kingdom in your family? Then listen to Messiah Jesus today. He speaks into His word, He speaks through the humans all around you, He speaks through Nature. He speaks….. so listen.
